  30. The noticeable quality difference with UVW's is in the signal-to-noise
  31. ratio. You can see this onscreen in the form of grunge, especially in darker
  32. images. This was a frequent problem for me when I owned an 1800. Some
  33. animations looked great, but many times it was heartbreaking to see my clean
  34. animations dirtied up so much. This also makes it more difficult to obtain a
  35. decent luminance key when animations are rendered over black (even true zero
  36. black). This grunge is either completely absent with BVW equipment, or
  37. nearly so 99% of the time (depending on the type of image). Also, in a
  38. linear editing setup, you get fewer generations out of UVW Beta due to its
  39. lower S/N ratio and more limited chroma bandwidth.

  41. I purchased a used BVW-35, the smallest portable they make. It only accepts
  42. small cassettes and has no TBC. But since I just need to lay off animations,
  43. it's not a problem. I could easily use it in a nonlinear setup though,
  44. because it has (limited) RS-422, and the PVR's capture card does its own
  45. time base correction anyway (Its big brother, the BVW-50, has an image
  46. stabilizer (a TBC with no controls) and accepts full-size cassettes). For a
  47. minimum price, I got true BVW quality. It cost me $7,500, which is about
  48. average for a deck of this type. It is NOT suitable as a linear edit deck,
  49. though I wouldn't have any problem using it to feed a nonlinear system.

  51. Bottom line: you can get a decent used BVW-35 for less than a UVW-1800. The
  52. quality difference is enormous. For many people this isn't an issue, but
  53. most of them aren't animators. I say once again though, check used equipment
  54. out THOROUGHLY before you commit. Put it through its paces at your shop first.
